Chapter Seventeen

“So, seriously, Cassandra,” Sean said as they drove away from Burke Senior High, back into Grand Springs, “have you considered a career in law enforcement? The FBI? The CIA?”

“Very funny,” Cassandra shot back at him as he turned the corner on Seventh Street and headed down Maple. “All I did was employ a little common sense.”

“Yes, I know. Which is something the local police didn’t do.” He smiled at her, really impressed by her brilliance. If the street weren’t so crowded with traffic, and if he weren’t the mature grown-up he wanted the world to believe he was, why, he might lean across the front seat and kiss her. Hell, he might just do it, anyway. He wasn’t that old. He wasn’t that responsible.

“We don’t know that nobody thought of it, Sean,” she corrected him, sounding once more the prudent professional. “For all we know, the police may have tried this months ago, with no success. But I’m glad you think it’s worth taking the chance.”

The “chance” they were taking had begun with a ride back up the mountain road to Burke Senior High where Smitty had met them with his key to the front door. Once inside, Cassandra had used her own key to the principal’s office and the main computer that contained information on every student enrolled at the school.

Part of that information was a list of every student who brought a car to school and used the school parking facilities. Each car had to be marked with a Burke sticker on the bumper, and each car had to be registered with the principal’s office. A photocopy of the owner’s card. The insurance information. The make of the car. The model. The year. The color of the car.

“Big Brother might not be watching everything we do these days,” Sean had said as they’d paged through the information, “but he’s getting closer all the time. And have you noticed how many kids are driving their own cars to school these days? Doesn’t anyone ride the bus anymore? Why are two new buses penciled in for next year’s operating budget? It sure doesn’t look as if anyone is riding on them.”

Cassandra had stuck a finger between two of the printouts they had brought with them, carefully marking her place, and looked at him owlishly as she said, “You probably walked ten miles to school, each way, when you were young, right? Through rain and snow and dark of night. You know, like the postal service used to do? And that was after you got up at five to milk the cows and churn the butter.”

Sean had decided he’d just been insulted. “I rode the bus every day until I graduated. No,” he added, “I take that back. I rode it until Charlie Hinkle got his license. Okay, so I didn’t ride it every day. But I did use the bus the taxpayer’s money provided for me.”

“Exactly! You rode the bus until you could find another way to school. Those
